Central Division

Standard

1. Nashville Predators

They weren’t supposed to be contenders last year, but they’re now ahead of the curve.

2. St. Louis Blues

Stability in the crease will go towards whether they stay in the playoffs long term.

3. Chicago Blackhawks

The defending champs lost some key pieces, but you can’t count them out.

4. Dallas Stars

Some key acquisitions should mean a leap into the playoffs.

5. Minnesota Wild

Staying pat keeps them in contention in a tough division.

6. Colorado Avalanche

A draft day trade shook things up to put Colorado in a bounce back position.

7. Winnipeg Jets

Too many better teams for them to repeat last years success. Continue reading

Pacific Division

Standard

1. Anaheim Ducks

This is the last chance for Bruce Boudreau to get the Ducks into a Cup Final.

2. Calgary Flames

The surprise team in the NHL last year will build on that momentum.

3. Los Angeles Kings

Having a year off will help this group of veterans recoup for another playoff run.

4. Vancouver Canucks

They were sneaky good last year, but that early playoff exit will sting.

5. San Jose Sharks

The wheels came off quickly and a rebuilt goaltending position won’t help this year.

6. Edmonton Oilers

When will all this top tier talent live up to their potential?

7. Arizona Coyotes

A tumultuous offseason with the city and ownership arguing over the stadium lease won’t help the on-ice product. Continue reading

Central Division #3 vs. Atlantic Division #2

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

Since 2010 the Blackhawks have been at the forefront of the Stanley Cup. This will be their third appearance in the Final and they have had the same cast of characters throughout most of their title runs. The Lightning will be making their second Final appearance and have a whole new cast from the one that led them to victory in 2004. Both Chicago and Tampa Bay play a similar style in that they try to lull their opponents to sleep and then pounce when the time is right. The Blackhawks did that with the Anaheim Ducks in the Western Conference Finals and the Lightning did it to the New York Rangers in the East. Their goalies aren’t highly regarded, but they have shown a lot of promise late in playoffs. Ben Bishop was astounding in net for the Lightning and Corey Crawford needed to be perfect for the Blackhawks. The one advantage going for Tampa Bay is that Chicago is a bit shorthanded on defense with injuries and fatigue taking a toll. The Blackhawks still boast a terrifying offense that goes nine deep up front. Tampa Bay isn’t short on offense either, but their defense was a big factor in getting this far. They’ll be put to the test with Chicago. It will be an interesting series that should be an offensive affair, but could come down to the defense.
