The Quest For A Top-3 Pick Begins
I alluded to the fact that the Atlanta Falcons were going to be punting on this season with the fact that they brought in QB Tua Tagovailoa to compete with incumbent starter Michael Penix for the starting spot. Two injury prone quarterbacks on the same roster doesn’t exactly exude confidence. Surprise, surprise both of them haven’t been able to play to start the season and the Falcons have gone to Cooper Rush. It wasn’t great in their first game, but it got even worse in their home opener. Benching Rush in the second half was the right call, but the replacement Jack Strand threw an interception on his first pass attempt. WR Drake London (pictured above) was directing some choice words to a fan at one point during the game from the sidelines. It’s never a good idea to do that considering what they are watching on the field currently. If RB Bijan Robinson was the quarterback and pretty much ran the ball every single play the results would be slightly better. Yet, they would remain 0-2.
Why Did They Bring Him Back?
In three season as a head coach Shane Steichen has a record of 25-26. No playoff appearances of 9-8, 8-9 and 8-9 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Last season the Colts lost their last seven games to finish the season. Yet, the Colts under owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon decided to bring Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard back for another season. At the time I wondered why there was any justification to bring back the same mediocrity that has been plaguing this franchise for quite some time now. It’s become even more puzzling with the Colts starting out this season 0-2 and giving up any chance of beating the Kansas City Chiefs this past Sunday night. The play-calling by Steichen on their final possession in overtime was just plain dumb. Inside the Chiefs redzone they ran it with RB Jonathan Taylor on the first two play calls for no gain with the Chiefs knowing they were gonna give it to him and then decided to have QB Daniel Jones attempt a pass, but saw him scramble for a modest two yard gain. The Colts were losing by 3 and could just kick a field goal to tie the game, but would give QB Patrick Mahomes over 3 minutes left to essentially win the game thus making the field goal attempt pointless. Go for the win is pretty much what everyone was saying out loud. Steichen settled to kick it after lining up to go for it on 4th down. And sure enough the Chiefs ended up marching down the field and kicked the game winning field goal. With the notes that Carlie was taking on the sidelines I wonder if she was paying attention to what transpired during that overtime?
Well, That Changed Rather Quickly
Well, I was going to mention the plethora of quarterback injuries that happened this past week. QB Jayden Daniels of the Commanders injuring the same elbow from last season. Giants QB Jaxson Dart needing surgery on his knee thus ending his season after leaving the Monday night game early. But what happened during and after Bears QB Caleb Williams was injured and carted off the field Sunday has me rolling in laughter and mockery. First, I haven’t had a hamstring injury and I don’t want to volunteer for one, but if it did happen and it was the exact kind of strain that Williams had I wouldn’t be nearly as dramatic as him. I figured it was an achilles injury which would justify the immediate reaction he had. You know the medical staff can figure out pretty much immediately what the problem is on the field. Taking the player back to the locker room is just to confirm what was already suspected. Being that the next day everyone was expecting the worst and the news drops that it’s a strained hamstring and he could possibly play in their next game justifies the mockery. Caleb acted like he got shot on the field and this is what the diagnosis was? From the perspective of the game the Bears only scoring 3 points at home in typical Chicago weather with Caleb Williams for most of the game shows that they will not be scoring anywhere near 59 points a game like in Week 1. Also Minnesota’s defense is a lot better than Carolina’s. If Caleb does end up playing in their next game the mockery will only continue and my goodness the memes have been gold.
