It’s Getting Worse Dallas
So you want to consider yourself a contender to win a Super Bowl year in and year out. Well, the first thing you should do is never allow 20 points in the 4th quarter to what is thought to be a lesser opponent. The Dallas Cowboys had a 24-10 lead in the 4th quarter at home against the Arizona Cardinals. They proceeded to allow the Cardinals’ backup QB Gardner Minshew to slice them up for 3 passing touchdowns. RB Tyler Allgeier had already torched the Cowboys defense for a 63-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter to bring some life back to Arizona. Dallas would end up going three and out on their lone possession in overtime after the Cardinals had tied the game. Predictably Arizona drove down the field for the eventual game-winning field goal to complete the comeback. Owner Jerry Jones might believe that he is the reason why the Cowboys won those three Super Bowl titles over 30 years ago now. The truth of the matter is that it was the players and the head coach at the time in Jimmy Johnson who won those Super Bowls. Jerry wrote the checks, but wanted the limelight at the same time. He still does as he is the only owner who holds his own press conferences after games in the NFL. This formula hasn’t worked and will never work so long as Jerry Jones continues down the same old path of taking no blame, but expecting to be given all the credit as some football genius. It’s been proven that Jimmy was responsible for that success. Jerry never was, but he is responsible for why they haven’t gotten a Conference Championship game since 1995.
This Should Not Have Worked
If you would ask me if a team this day and age could win a football game without completing a single pass I would say ‘no way’. Well, that isn’t the case as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers attempted only 3 passes this past week and didn’t complete a single one. They ran the ball for 324 yards and shutout the Atlanta Falcons 16-0. Now it was a rainy, wet and messy affair for most of the game. Which explains mostly why the Bucs ran the ball so much, but also QB Baker Mayfield is playing with an injured thumb on his throwing hand. This is the second consecutive game that this has worked for the Bucs. Atlanta should have been doing this as well, but they continued to throw the ball which failed miserably in that weather. Falcons QB Michael Penix threw four interceptions and they only mustered 99 yards on the ground. Atlanta was not prepared for the weather and they certainly didn’t know what to do with stopping the Bucs from rushing the ball for over 300 yards. Not completing a single pass and still winning the game is quite the feat and I don’t think we will see that again.
One Guy Made A Difference
Most of the time in the NFL one player doesn’t make a difference. That changed for the Chicago Bears on Monday night as this was the first game with newly acquired DL Jefferey Simmons from the Tennessee Titans. Simmons had 6 tackles, 1 sack and deflected one pass as well against the Seattle Seahawks. Simmons was in on almost every single play it seemed for the Bears. Chicago’s defense had been scuffling at times this season, but the acquisition of Simmons has brought new life to that unit. Anyone that is questioning the compensation given up to Tennessee should rethink that. I know it’s only a one-game sample size, but because he has played for the Titans his entire career, no one knows how good he truly has been. He’s been named to four Pro Bowls, a first-team All-Pro once and a second-team All-Pro twice. Simmons is legit and this was a sneaky good trade with many more likely to come before the November 10th deadline.
