Week 1 Review of the NFL

Have Yourself A Day

If I were to tell you that a rookie running back who fumbled on his first carry in the NFL, would be the reason for his team beating the defending Super Bowl champions, you might think I’m crazy. That’s just what happened to Kareem Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs when they took care of the New England Patriots. Here it was I thought after he fumbled that it was the making of another easy Patriots victory at home. It was not the case with Hunt bouncing back in a big way with over 140 rushing yards and a touchdown. He wasn’t done by adding 5 catches with just under 100 yards and two receiving touchdowns. It could have been a forgettable day for Hunt, but to his credit and the Chiefs coaching staff, they stuck with him and it helped get a big win.

That’s Why He Got Paid

Many were asking why Matthew Stafford is now the highest paid quarterback in the NFL coming into this season. You got your answer after Week 1. The Lions were the comeback kings last season, which was why they clinched a Wild Card spot in the playoffs. A big reason for that was the play of their franchise quarterback, Matthew Stafford. They were down 17-9 to the Arizona Cardinals with just under 5 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter. Plenty of time for the Lions. They wound up scoring 26 unanswered points that included three of Stafford’s four touchdowns on the day. Detroit knows and now the rest of the league does how much he means to this team. Slowly, but surely I’m becoming a fan of Stafford. With him and Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders, they are becoming the new top tier quarterbacks in the NFL.

A First Class Individual

In the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Harvey that went through the Gulf Coast and into Texas, J.J. Watt took it upon himself to start a fundraiser to help those displaced by the hurricane in Houston, Texas. He was giving daily fundraising updates on social media and putting up new goals to raise $5 million, $10 million and $20 million dollars. His original goal was $200,000. Over $32 million dollars was raised to help those in need. I’ve said this before about J.J. and I’ll say it again. He is a perfect role model and he embraces it well. He is constantly interacting with fans of all ages and this fundraiser was just the tipping point that made everyone realize just how special he is. I salute you J.J. Watt and thank you for all that you do. If you would like to donate, you can do so here.
