2020 World Series Champions

They have been considered to be the best team in baseball in the last five seasons. Coincidentally that is the amount of time that Dave Roberts has been the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They made it to the World Series in back-to-back seasons in 2017-18 and lost both times. This time the results ended up being different and it has solidified their standing in baseball.

The eventual World Series MVP Corey Seager continued his stellar play from the NLCS by batting .400 for the World Series and drove in 5 runs. Mookie Betts had a clutch double in Game 6 when Tampa Bay removed their starter Blake Snell from the game in the 6th inning. He didn’t have the impact at the plate for the entire series, but having him in the lineup this time around made a difference when it mattered. Justin Turner, who has been at the forefront during this run for the Dodgers, was his usual self with a .320 series average and 2 home runs. Max Muncy was constantly getting on base and led the team in RBI with 6 for the series.

Aside from the disastrous ending to Game 4, this was a well played series by the Dodgers. The only threat to the Dodgers was what Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena would do next. He was a catalyst, but not a run producer which is what the Rays were lacking. The Dodgers didn’t have the superior bullpen, but being able to have Julio Urias available for such a role was crucial for them in Game 7 of the NLCS and Game 6 of the World Series.

Walker Buehler only started for one game, but it was an important one in Game 3. His 10 strikeout performance in 6 innings propelled the Dodgers forward. Clayton Kershaw pitched his best games of his Postseason career in Games 1 and 5. He combined to strikeout 14 batters in 11-2/3 innings of work in those two starts.

There are certainly some tweaks that can be made going forward, but this team is built to win for many years.

If Kershaw decides to stop playing once his contract expires, they have the depth to replace him. Mookie Betts is the only important bat that has a long-term commitment. The next will most likely be Corey Seager. They have many options at their disposal and the scary thing is that they now have confirmation that it worked in their favor.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Dodgers for winning their 7th World Series title in franchise history.
