We have arrived at the halfway point (sort of thanks to a 17-game schedule) of the NFL season. Here’s a brief rundown of who are contenders, outsiders and are planning for next season.

Standard1. New Orleans Saints
They should win this division by default simply for having the better quarterback in Derek Carr.
2. Atlanta Falcons
Back-to-back 7-win seasons has Atlanta primed for a chance to take this extremely weak division.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
They were wildly inconsistent last year, but won the division because Tom Brady was around. Now QB Baker Mayfield has replaced the retired Brady. This will be interesting to watch.
4. Carolina Panthers
It will be a painful ride, but the franchise is Bryce Young’s to lead going forward at quarterback.

This is becoming a well oiled machine. 49ers QB Brock Purdy threw for 332 yards and 3 touchdown passes in his first playoff start against the Seattle Seahawks. RB Christian McCaffrey ran for 119 yards with a receiving touchdown and WR Deebo Samuel had 133 receiving yards and a touchdown catch. The defense forced two turnovers in the second half and nearly shutout Seattle in the second half giving up a touchdown in garbage time. This was the third time facing their division rival and the 49ers swept them in impressive fashion. It’ll be interesting if this continues.

StandardIt’s Been A While
The New York Giants took care of business and punched their ticket to the playoffs. They haven’t had a playoff appearance since 2016. There have been numerous failures along the way with Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge being their head coaches for only two seasons each. In McAdoo’s case he didn’t finish his second season. Now with Brian Daboll as their head coach, there seems to be some semblance of balance. The defense has been good and the offense is impressive, but not amongst the most dynamic. That’s okay though as the results have the Giants in the playoffs. It will be good to see RB Saquon Barkley see some action in January.
