2011 World Series Champions

World Series MVP: 3B David Freese – St. Louis Cardinals
.348 AVG, 1 HR, 7 RBI

Will the 2011 World Series be considered one of the best of all-time?  Yes.  The reason.  It had everything.  By that I mean close, historic games and even come from behind victories.  Games 1 and 2 were one run victories for both the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.  Game 3 we saw a historic performance from 1B Albert Pujols going 5 for 6 with 3 HR and 6 RBI.  Game 4 had one of the best pitching performances in a World Series by Derek Holland of the Rangers.  Game 5 gave Texas all the momentum to win their first World Series title, but Game 6 had one of the most dramatic comebacks in World Series history.

You can’t really say that the Cardinals were a team of destiny.  No one, me included didn’t even have them making the postseason at the beginning of September.  They got hot at the right time.  That’s usually the case with most of the championship teams in every sport.  That same case can be said about the World Series MVP David Freese.  He has struggled to stay healthy for an entire season, but he remained healthy going into August and September. Then he started to heat up in the NLCS.

The Milwaukee Brewers had no answers for Freese.  His numbers during the 6 games of the NLCS went as follows; .545 AVG, 3 HR, 9 RBI.  With Freese doing that in a lineup that includes Albert Pujols, Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday it’s pretty phenomenal. Freese’s story is amazing too.  A native of St. Louis, Missouri he was acquired from the San Diego Padres in 2007 in a trade for CF Jim Edmonds.  The Cardinals have a history of making subtle trades that eventually pay off in the end.  The scary thing is they won a World Series when one of their best starting pitchers went down with Tommy John surgery in Spring Training.  That’s right, Adam Wainwright should be back next year ready to defend this title.

Congratulations to the St. Louis Cardinals on winning their 11th World Series title.  Now they just need to re-sign Albert Pujols and everything will be fine in St. Louis.

2011 World Series
Texas Rangers vs. St. Louis Cardinals
There isn’t a single person that had the Texas Rangers getting back to the World Series after they had lost Cliff Lee in the offseason.  The thought was that their pitching wouldn’t be good enough to get them to this point again.  However, by acquiring relievers Mike Adams and Koji Uehara at the trade deadline during the season that has helped their depth in the bullpen.  This postseason the Rangers bullpen has been tremendous in helping the Rangers put away the Tampa Bay Rays hot bats and the Detroit Tigers powerful lineup.  Texas also is fortunate to have a powerful lineup for themselves.  OF Nelson Cruz was on fire during the ALCS and earned MVP honors.  Really there isn’t any weak points in their lineup.  Although if a few of their power bats, say Cruz, Adrian Beltre, Mike Napoli or Josh Hamilton all go cold during the World Series, then the Rangers will only be looking at an American League title instead of a World title.
I’m pretty sure that the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers would have liked to have done things differently at the end of the season.  The Phillies shouldn’t have swept the Atlanta Braves during the final series of the season and the Brewers should have a few more games against the Cardinals down the stretch.  Had they done that the Cardinals wouldn’t be in the postseason.  Now St. Louis is in the World Series for the 18th time in franchise history.  Second only to the New York Yankees in baseball history.  Like the Rangers, the Cardinals bullpen was phenomenal.  It is full of no-name players for the most part, but manager Tony LaRussa knows how to use and at what point in the game to use them.  It’s his style and it does work.  Look at his record.  The Cardinals key will be which Chris Carpenter shows up. The one who put away the Phillies or the one who struggled against the Brewers.  St. Louis shouldn’t have any trouble scoring runs with Albert Pujols, Lance Berkman and NLCS MVP David Freese in the lineup.  The Cardinals have the better starting pitching and they will need it to win another World Series.

Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers
The Tigers had just enough to beat the New York Yankees.  They had better pitching when they needed it and timely hits when they had to have them.  Manager Jim Leyland only had his Cy Young candidate Justin Verlander pitch in only one game.  I know he did start Game 1, but I’m not going to count that one. When he did pitch he was exactly what the Tigers needed.  Detroit also got a great start from Doug Fister in the clinching game in New York.  If both Verlander and Fister can repeat those performances.  Plus Delmon Young can continue his hot streak at the plate.  The Tigers might be heading to another World Series.  However, they will need more production from the entire lineup.  Namely Alex Avila and Miguel Cabrera.
The Texas Rangers had a nice balance throughout their lineup.  Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton had big hits at key moments.  Mike Napoli and Adrian Beltre had a power surge to get Texas ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays for good.  The only problem was with their pitching.  Namely C.J. Wilson.  If he doesn’t have a rocky start to the series the Rangers just might have a chance at getting back to the World Series.  Texas’ bullpen was fantastic and the big reason why the Rangers are back to defend their American League title. They have a devastating offense, but they must have a balanced attack to get back to the World Series.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers

There is absolutely no quit in the Cardinals.  They knocked off the Philadelphia Phillies.  Everyone’s (including me) pick to win the World Series this year.  After Game 1 the Phillies offense was stagnant and that was a credit to the Cardinals bullpen who proved me wrong by lulling the Phillies bats to sleep.  St. Louis got a fantastic performance out of Chris Carpenter to win the Series in Philadelphia in Game 5.  He’ll have to do that again during the Championship Series.  Albert Pujols didn’t have to hit a bunch of home runs, but he was constantly getting hits.  The same could be said for Skip Schumaker and David Freese.  Especially Freese who has finally arrived as the cornerstone third baseman that the Cardinals have missed since Scott Rolen.  If the Cardinals pitching can continue their consistent production the Cardinals could surprise everyone all over again.
Everything is going right for the Brewers.  They have a dominant starter in Yovani Gallardo.  Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder are doing exactly what they need to do to get Milwaukee runs.  The bullpen has been spectacular.  But the one glaring fact is that the Brewers don’t play very well away from Miller Park.  They go into the Championship Series against their division rival St. Louis.  This will be the biggest test for a team and a franchise that won only their second postseason series in franchise history against Arizona.  If they can return to the World Series it will reignite a fan base that has desperately been wanting another chance at winning the World Series.

2011 MLB Postseason Preview

I’m going to be the first to admit it.  I had a bad year of predicting the playoff teams.  I picked Boston, Minnesota, LA Angels and Chicago for the American League.  None of them are here.  So I guess that makes it easier to pick the American League winner now.  In the National League I only got one right.  That was Philadelphia.  The others were San Francisco, Cincinnati and Colorado.  Who did I pick to win the World Series?  It was Philadelphia.  That much I have going forward.  Without further adieu, the breakdown of this years Division Series.
American League Division Series
Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees
Now some will say that this would be a cake walk for the Yankees. It’s an AL Central team.  The Yankees have beaten up those teams in the past.  Yes, that was the Minnesota Twins.  This time it’s the Detroit Tigers.  Big difference.  The reason being is that Detroit has some pretty good pitchers.  Not just Justin Verlander. Doug Fister and Max Scherzer aren’t too shabby either.  I can guarantee that the Yankees would like to have both of them in their rotation right now.  Not to mention that Detroit’s lineup is stacked with great hitters.  1B Miguel Cabrera sits in the middle and is protected by DH Victor Martinez who has been worth every penny. C Alex Avila is having a monstrous season and has been a big part of the pitching staffs success.  Don’t forget about waiver wire pickup OF Delmon Young who took off since being acquired with 8 HR and 32 RBI.  He doubled his home run total and matched his RBI total with Minnesota in just 40 games with Detroit.
Now New York doesn’t have any slouches either.  SS Derek Jeter and 2B Robinson Cano are running the show while 1B Mark Teixeira and OF Nick Swisher provide the support.  The important thing for New York will be if Cano can continue his hitting prowess against superior pitching.  Out of every American League team this postseason, the Tigers have the best all around.  Also which Alex Rodriguez will show up.  The injury plagued one or the one that helped to a World Series title back in 2009.  Of course the biggest problem with the Yankees has been their pitching.  C.C. Sabathia can only do so much.  If he falters in Game 1, what’s to say that Ivan Nova or Freddy Garcia can mount a comeback.  I don’t think it’s a going to be a clean sweep either way, but if Verlander is still his dominant self.  Does New York stand a chance?

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers
The epic comeback of the Tampa Bay Rays this season will be remembered for a long time.  It should also be noted that the Rays did all of this without a big portion of the players that lead to playoff appearances just a few seasons ago.  There are some new faces that are leading the way.  One of them is pitcher Matt Moore, who in limited time lit a spark for the Rays at crucial points down the stretch of September.  He along with James Shields and David Price will form a fabulous trio against the high powered offense of Texas.  3B Evan Longoria is clearly going to be up to the challenge of leading this club offensively, but he will need help from the likes of OF B.J. Upton and 1B Casey Kotchman who was competing for the AL batting title this year.  If the Rays can continue this magical run it could bode well for them in late October.
Other than the Detroit Tigers the Texas Rangers had a fairly easy road in September.  They beat Oakland and Seattle down the stretch while the Angels struggled against the likes of Oakland and Seattle.  That was the difference between them and the Angels. Texas won the games they were supposed to win.  The Rangers are very thankful to have a healthy 3B Adrian Beltre just in time for the postseason.  He brings a big presence in the middle of their lineup and defensively as well.  OF Nelson Cruz will have to remain healthy if the Rangers are to make it back to the World Series and they will need continued power from C Mike Napoli.  The big question is with their pitching staff.  Without Cliff Lee, its just C.J. Wilson and whomever.  The Rangers will go with Derek Holland in Game 2, but after that it’s either Colby Lewis or Alexi Ogando. Both struggled mightily down the stretch, but Lewis will probably get the start because of last years performance.  It’s a different Rays team the Rangers are facing this year.

National League Division Series
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Phillies
The Cardinals made it to the postseason when myself and so many others had them out back at the beginning of September. Now that they’re in, I don’t know if they can get any further.  The Cardinals best hitters, 1B Albert Pujols, OF Lance Berkman and OF Matt Holliday are going to have their hands full against the Phillies pitching staff.  Will the Cardinals pitchers, Kyle Lohse, Edwin Jackson and Chris Carpenter be able to match the Phillies? It’s hard to say yes to that question, but look what the Giants did last year and the Phillies didn’t have Cliff Lee at that time.  The Cardinals have been playing scrappy baseball down the stretch and were thankful to play the Houston Astros for their final series. However, I don’t think there will be enough left in their bullpen to save a lead.
We all know who the Phillies have, but lets say their names anyway; Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt. Yeah, that’s pretty good.  I’m not sold on the Phillies bullpen either, but if you can give those starters a big enough lead or have them pitch the entire game, it won’t be that much of a problem.  2B Chase Utley has to play up to his standards in this injury riddled year and will OF Hunter Pence be just as good during the postseason as he was when he was acquired before the trade deadline?  He will have to if 1B Ryan Howard has a bad start. Howard will be the key to their success this postseason.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Milwaukee Brewers

This is the most intriguing matchup.  Both of these teams were red hot during the summer and wrapped up their division titles in the middle of September.  Arizona has the worst to first tag to them this year.  Thanks in large part to their ace Ian Kennedy.  He along with the rest of the pitching staff have done just enough to keep the Diamondbacks afloat in the NL West.  The Giants did gain some ground, but the lead was too big.  What happens after Kennedy is on the mound will be the story for Arizona.  They don’t have as deep a staff as Milwaukee, but Joe Saunders does have some postseason experience and Daniel Hudson is a hard throwing type. Arizona’s bread and butter though is with their offense. OF Justin Upton will finally be seen on the big stage.  He has been flanked by a young corp and a veteran corp that has been perfectly mixed to create a winning environment.  It will be interesting to see if it can continue with the spotlight looming large.
The Brewers are making a big push this year to make some noise in this postseason.  Mainstay Yovani Gallardo will get the ball for Game 1.  Rest assured the big offseason acquisitions Zach Greinke and Shaun Marcum will get their chance as well.  They also have a veteran in Randy Wolf who will prove to be invaluable if they get past the Division Series.  The bullpen was built to win now with Francisco Rodriguez being a setup man to closer John Axford. That combination could prove to be a monumental success.  OF Ryan Braun is taking this team to new heights.  Whether 1B Prince Fielder stays after this year or not is at the back burner now.  All that matters is bringing a championship to Milwaukee.  It’s hard to believe that the Brewers have only been to the playoffs now two times in the last 30 years.  Now is the time for that trend to change.

2011 MLB Trade Deadline Recap

Standard
Of the 15 contenders that I determined had to make a deal to remain in contention, only 10 did before the end of the trade deadline.  Some decided to stay put while some decided to let go. Here are some of the biggest trades that will probably be talked about for the rest of the season as moves that either helped or hurt the teams involved.

July 27

Toronto Blue Jays
OF Colby Rasmus
INF/OF Mark Teahen
P Brian Tallet
P Trevor Miller
P P.J. Walters

Chicago White Sox
P Jason Frasor
P Zach Stewart

St. Louis Cardinals
P Edwin Jackson
P Octavio Dotel
P Mark Rzepczynski
OF Corey Patterson

A bit of a confusing deal.  With the amount of players involved and the direction the Cardinals decided to go.  They decided to cut their losses with Rasmus, but settled to deal him for immediate help and not long-term.  Jackson will be great under the tutelage of pitching coach Dave Duncan, but will he stay past this year?  Dotel will help shore up the late inning relief, but he isn’t a long-term solution. Chicago gets immediate help with Frasor in their bullpen.  They are counting on their slumping offense to wake up down the stretch. Toronto has a viable replacement for Vernon Wells in Rasmus. Did I mention that he’s a lot easier on their payroll too. Teahen was a nice addition as a super utility guy, but nothing more.  The pitchers they received aren’t long-term solutions, but will help keep things balanced this year.

July 28

San Francisco Giants
OF Carlos Beltran

New York Mets
P Zach Wheeler

The Giants are still the team to beat.  They gave up their best pitching prospect to acquire the best hitter on the trade market. General Manager Brian Sabean was in a postion of strength having Wheeler at his disposal to lure the Mets into making a deal and taking care of half of Beltran’s remaining salary.  It goes to show you the plan the Giants have going forward and that is they will do what makes sense to win a championship.  If they decide to let Beltran go as a free agent they will get two draft picks for him.

July 29

Philadelphia Phillies
OF Hunter Pence

Houston Astros
P Jarred Cosart
OF Jonathan Singleton
P Josh Zeid
Player to be named later

They have done it again.  The Phillies swoop in and grab the next best player via trade.  Once Beltran was dealt to the Giants, I and others thought the Phillies would probably go for a more affordable hitter i.e, Ryan Ludwick or Kosuke Fukudome.  Instead they kept after the Astros and acquired their best player.  Amazingly they did so without giving up their best young hitter, OF Domonic Brown and their best young pitcher, Vance Worley.  Houston still received some good players, mainly Cosart and Singleton, but they gave up their only star player in Hunter Pence.  Philadelphia has now purged the Astros in back-to-back years.  Last year was Roy Oswalt and this year Pence.  He will be a mainstay for many years in Philly.

July 30

Texas Rangers
P Koji Uehara

Baltimore Orioles
P Tommy Hunter
1B Chris Davis

Baltimore might have actually done something right for a change. They maximized an asset and got two players that can play right away for them instead of down the line.  Hunter won 12 games last year for the American League champions.  Davis is still a big power threat, but wasn’t getting enough at bats in Texas anymore. Uehara is exactly what Texas needs for their bullpen.  Someone who will throw strikes.  Texas like the San Francisco Giants are going all in to try and win a championship.

Cleveland Indians
P Ubaldo Jimenez

Colorado Rockies
P Alex White
P Joseph Gardner
P Drew Pomeranz
1B Matt McBride

The time was now for one of the best starting pitchers in the National League last to be dealt.  The Rockies are now out of the running for any playoff spot and they were looking to maximize their best asset.  The big clubs weren’t willing to give the Rockies what they wanted so Cleveland said we’ll gladly oblige.  After so many years of giving away their best players the Indians decided to go all in.  Their fans are happy to finally see that their team is finally making a move to stay in contention rather than plan for the future.  The future is now with Jimenez being fixed at the top of their rotation for a couple more years.

July 31

Atlanta Braves
OF Michael Bourn

Houston Astros
OF Jordan Schafer
P Juan Abreu
P Paul Clemens
P Brett Oberholtzer

Now that Hunter Pence was dealt the next best player the Astros were willing to deal was Bourn.  Atlanta was probably better off getting Bourn instead of Pence.  It’s just a better fit for what they need.  A leadoff hitter who can get on base and disrupt the opposing pitcher.  Bourn is the fastest baserunner in the National League and the Braves were glad to deal one of their best outfield prospects in Schafer.  He has struggled to stay in the majors the last two years, but Houston has a good player in him.  Abreu will be a good pitcher for them as well, but they didn’t get any of the Braves best pitchers in Mike Minor, Julio Teheran or Randall Delgado.  Atlanta might just have stolen Bourn from Houston.

Texas Rangers
P Mike Adams

San Diego Padres
P Robbie Erlin
P Joe Wieland

This was the best move the Rangers made.  Adams is one of the best setup men in the game today.  Everyone wondered why the Padres were in contention last year and one big reason is because of their bullpen.  Adams was a big part of that.  He will immediately solidify the 8th inning for Texas and make it easier for Neftali Feliz in the 9th.  The Padres settled for two good pitchers that will probably be competing for spots in the near future.  Texas fixed a weakness after striking out on getting Carlos Beltran.

Arizona Diamondbacks
P Brad Ziegler

Oakland Athletics
1B Brandon Allen
P Jordan Norberto

Ziegler is one of the most durable pitchers in the game.  The sidewinder has never been placed on the disabled list and now that closer J.J. Putz is back of the DL the D’Backs have a good late inning duo down the stretch.  Oakland might have gotten a good hitter in Allen if he could ever duplicate his production in the minors.  He will be given a look this year and might be the first baseman next year.  Arizona in a separate deal acquired starter Jason Marquis from the Washington Nationals.  He’s an innings eater and ground ball pitcher who will help keep the Diamondbacks from giving up the long ball in their hitter friendly ballpark.
