2011 World Series
Texas Rangers vs. St. Louis Cardinals
There isn’t a single person that had the Texas Rangers getting back to the World Series after they had lost Cliff Lee in the offseason. The thought was that their pitching wouldn’t be good enough to get them to this point again. However, by acquiring relievers Mike Adams and Koji Uehara at the trade deadline during the season that has helped their depth in the bullpen. This postseason the Rangers bullpen has been tremendous in helping the Rangers put away the Tampa Bay Rays hot bats and the Detroit Tigers powerful lineup. Texas also is fortunate to have a powerful lineup for themselves. OF Nelson Cruz was on fire during the ALCS and earned MVP honors. Really there isn’t any weak points in their lineup. Although if a few of their power bats, say Cruz, Adrian Beltre, Mike Napoli or Josh Hamilton all go cold during the World Series, then the Rangers will only be looking at an American League title instead of a World title.
I’m pretty sure that the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers would have liked to have done things differently at the end of the season. The Phillies shouldn’t have swept the Atlanta Braves during the final series of the season and the Brewers should have a few more games against the Cardinals down the stretch. Had they done that the Cardinals wouldn’t be in the postseason. Now St. Louis is in the World Series for the 18th time in franchise history. Second only to the New York Yankees in baseball history. Like the Rangers, the Cardinals bullpen was phenomenal. It is full of no-name players for the most part, but manager Tony LaRussa knows how to use and at what point in the game to use them. It’s his style and it does work. Look at his record. The Cardinals key will be which Chris Carpenter shows up. The one who put away the Phillies or the one who struggled against the Brewers. St. Louis shouldn’t have any trouble scoring runs with Albert Pujols, Lance Berkman and NLCS MVP David Freese in the lineup. The Cardinals have the better starting pitching and they will need it to win another World Series.
