1. Los Angeles Dodgers
Too much good pitching will keep them atop the division.
2. Arizona Diamondbacks
Added protection for Goldschmidt will help them contend.
3. San Francisco Giants
Their lineup has to be healthy from start to finish.
4. San Diego Padres
Solid pitching, but too many questions in their lineup to contend.
5. Colorado Rockies
If CarGo and Tulo are healthy at the same time they’ll be sneaky good.
Player to Watch: OF Yasiel Puig Los Angeles Dodgers
He was the talk of baseball as soon as he was called up last season. While the Dodgers can’t say it was all because of Puig that they turned their season around, he was a big part of it. With the Dodgers increasing payroll they’ll still need a full season of production from Puig and the rest of baseball will have to just sit back and watch. While he did rub some of his peers the wrong way he does have time to learn and must if the Dodgers are going to have any success. They are relying heavily on the Cuban phenom to help offset any injuries that might happen to Kemp, Ethier and Crawford. He is the real deal, but this season will be a big test for him.
Best Acquisition: OF/1B Mark Trumbo Arizona Diamondbacks
There is no doubt about the power that he possesses. In a hitter friendly ballpark he could easily hit 40 home runs. Arizona needs Trumbo to be the protection they so desperately need for their MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt. The D’Backs have a vast array of pitching, but their lineup needs an influx of power and relief for guys like Montero and Prado who were counted on to do the heavy lifting with Goldschmidt last year. If Arizona gets some productive years out of Trumbo they could be looking at a great 1-2 punch in the heart of their order.
New Kid on the Block: P Jonathan Gray Colorado Rockies
Everyone always touts the Rockies hitters and why wouldn’t they when they play in a hitters paradise half the year. For over 20 years though this franchise has struggled to find legitimate pitching to bring balance with their offense. They might be getting that this year with youngsters like Gray and fellow prospect Eddie Butler. Both are primed for a call-up to the big leagues this year, barring injury. If Colorado is hanging around for a playoff spot Gray and Butler could be a breath of fresh air in the thin air of the Rocky Mountains. St. Louis and Pittsburgh is getting a lot of attention for their young pitching and Colorado could be next in line.
