Recap of Super Bowl LIX

Defense Won This Championship

While my prediction of RB Saquon Barkley breaking the Super Bowl rushing record didn’t come close to happening. The Eagles defense suffocated Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and didn’t allow them to score until 34 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. This Super Bowl was over at halftime and the final score is deceptive to that fact.

The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t need to blitz on defense in order to establish a consistent pass rush. Josh Sweat had 2.5 sacks, Milton Williams had 2, Jordan Davis and rookie LB Jalyx Hunt had 1 and .5 a sack respectively. Doing the math that adds up to six total sacks against the Kansas City Chiefs. Not to mention they didn’t allow the Chiefs to have any semblance of a running game with only 49 yards rushing.

Saquon Barkley didn’t have an awful game as he totaled 97 yards both rushing and receiving combined. He didn’t score a touchdown, but for him what was more important was the victory. QB Jalen Hurts only had one bad moment as he threw an interception in the redzone early in the 2nd quarter. Other than that he had a great game with two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown. The iconic play was his 46-yard game ender to WR DeVonta Smith late in the 3rd quarter to put the Eagles up 34-0.

While this was not the outcome that most had expected or wanted, it was proof that the Philadelphia Eagles have a foundation that is going to be tough to dismantle. Their defense has a lot of mainstays that will only get better as time goes on. Their offense is built to win in different ways which makes them hard to game plan for.

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles on winning their second Super Bowl title in franchise history. Two Super Bowl appearances in three seasons and they could be adding more to that for the next few seasons.
