Nearly Flawless
QB Josh Allen is the MVP this season unless his play slips for the last three games of the season. For now, he has been unstoppable for Buffalo through the air and on the ground. He’s not turning the ball over, he’s efficient and he is scoring touchdowns in bunches. The only flaw for the Buffalo team as a whole is their coverage unit on defense. A game that was over early against the Detroit Lions was narrowed due to the Bills secondary allowing 494 passing yards and 5 touchdown passes by Lions QB Jared Goff. That could come back to bite them in the playoffs if Josh Allen can’t put points on the board for every possession. This is their best chance for a Super Bowl run as long as they shore up that back end of the defense.
Tua Ain’t The Guy
It’s true that the Miami Dolphins as they are currently constructed function better with QB Tua Tagovailoa than any other quarterback they’ve used when he’s hurt. However, as was demonstrated this past week he is not the answer for them to be contenders in the long run. They have a talented wide receiver corps with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but Tua is best suited as a quick drop, short to intermediate passer. This style of offense is being stymied by opposing defenses now. Two years they were the talk of the league. It has become apparent that they need to adjust, but head coach Mike McDaniel hasn’t done a good job of doing that this season. Miami is likely stuck with Tua since he was given a massive extension if they decide to fire McDaniel after this season. If that’s the case they should move on from Hill and/or Waddle at wide receiver. A power running game and possession receivers would do wonders for Tua, but as it stands now this iteration won’t work in Miami.
It Isn’t Sunshine And Rainbows In Indianapolis
At the beginning of the third quarter the Indianapolis Colts were up 13-7 on Denver in what was becoming a turnover fest between the two, but the Colts were looking to pull away. RB Jonathan Taylor broke a big run for a touchdown that would have given Indianapolis a 20-7 lead. Yet, he stupidly dropped the ball at the one-yard line before crossing into the end zone. It was correctly ruled a fumble that went out of bounds for a touchback. The Colts would go on to give up 24 unanswered points to lose a crucial game to the Denver Broncos. If the Colts wanted any chance of clinching a playoff spot, they had to win this game. That fumble by Taylor signaled their doom and to make matters worse they threw a pick-six trying to execute the worst trick play I had seen in quite some time in the 4th quarter. We are fortunate that the Colts will likely not be in the playoffs this season. They are awful and they have a ways to go with a quarterback project who can’t complete more than 50% of his pass attempts. Now that reliable players like Jonathan Taylor are committing boneheaded plays this could get a lot worse down the stretch.
