AFC West

Standard

1. Kansas City Chiefs

Many teams have come close to winning three consecutive Super Bowl titles. This could be the best chance of that actually coming to fruition.

2. Los Angeles Chargers

They finally faced the music and went and got Jim Harbaugh to be their head coach after his national championship season at the university of Michigan.

3. Las Vegas Raiders

I don’t see them being one of the worst teams, but I also don’t see them being one of the better teams. It’s not the best place to be when you need a franchise quarterback.

4. Denver Broncos

It’s not likely, but they could make a jump this season in the standings. If rookie QB Bo Nix proves his doubters wrong.

Head Coach: Andy Reid

Key Position: Wide Receiver

This was the most troublesome unit for the eventual Super Bowl champions. They found their groove when it mattered most, but needed to make some changes. Marquise Brown provides a deep threat, but isn’t expected to be a Tyreek Hill clone. The possibility of a Tyreek clone goes to first round pick Xavier Worthy. He’s a taller version of Hill and just as fast. TE Travis Kelce put in another great season, but his 5 touchdown total was very low for his standards. WR Rashee Rice is lucky to not be serving jail time currently nor a suspension for his drag racing antics in the offseason. He could be the breakout candidate of this group.

Key Acquisitions: WR Marquise Brown (Arizona Cardinals), RB Samaje Perine (Denver Broncos), WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (New England Patriots), QB Carson Wentz (LA Rams)

Key Rookies: WR Xavier Worthy, OL Kingsley Suamataia, DB Jaden Hicks

Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh (University of Michigan)

Key Position: Running Back

With Jim Harbaugh’s return to the NFL, that means he will be establishing the running game no matter who his quarterback is. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Chargers first round pick was OT Joe Alt who should help in establishing the rushing attack. Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins were brought in to be the new tandem in the backfield. They have familiarity with this style as Harbaugh brought in Greg Roman as his offensive coordinator. Roman was in Baltimore when Edwards and Dobbins were there and Roman was Harbaugh’s coordinator in San Francisco when he had success there. It might not happen immediately, but the running game will be better than what QB Justin Herbert is used to since he was drafted.

Key Acquisitions: OL Bradley Bozeman (Carolina Panthers), WR DJ Chark (Carolina Panthers), TE Will Dissly (Seattle Seahawks), RB J.K. Dobbins (Baltimore Ravens), LB Bud Dupree (Atlanta Falcons), RB Gus Edwards (Baltimore Ravens), DT Poona Ford (Buffalo Bills), CB Kristian Fulton (Tennessee Titans), QB Taylor Heinicke (Atlanta Falcons), TE Hayden Hurst (Carolina Panthers), LB Denzel Perryman (Houston Texans)

Key Rookies: OT Joe Alt, WR Ladd McConkey, LB Junior Colson

Head Coach: Antonio Pierce (Interim Last Season)

Key Position: Quarterback

For their sake, the Raiders hope that Gardner Minshew can be that quarterback that can get them over the hump. He nearly did last season in Indianapolis, but that doesn’t mean it will happen in Las Vegas. He is better than what Jimmy Garoppolo was for them last season. Aidan O’Connell did well last season for the Raiders and they feel comfortable having him as the backup again should Minshew struggle or get hurt. Having WR Davante Adams and two capable tight ends in Michael Mayer and Brock Bowers to throw doesn’t hurt either.

Key Acquisitions: RB Alexander Mattison (Minnesota Vikings), QB Gardner Minshew II (Indianapolis Colts), OL Andrus Peat (New Orleans Saints), OL Cody Whitehair (Chicago Bears), DT Christian Wilkins (Miami Dolphins)

Key Rookies: TE Brock Bowers, OL Jackson Powers-Johnson

Head Coach: Sean Payton

Key Position: Everything

This is now head coach Sean Payton’s roster as he has moved on from the disastrous Russell Wilson trade and also let a mainstay on defense in Justin Simmons go as well. Bo Nix is Payton’s guy at quarterback. While it remains to be seen if he can do for Payton what Drew Brees did for him in New Orleans, Nix’s scrambling ability is far and away better than Brees’. WR Courtland Sutton grabbed 10 touchdowns last season, but can he take the next step as a legitimate top receiver? RB Javonte Williams is now two years removed from his knee injury. This will be a make or break year for him. There are a lot of young players on defense and some are already emerging. Jonathan Cooper and Nik Bonitto are their two best edge rushers. Bringing in John Franklin-Myers should bode well for Zach Allen who was double teamed a lot last season. CB Pat Surtain is their shutdown corner and his extension shows Denver means business in that regard.

Key Acquisitions: LB Cody Barton (Washington Commanders), DL John Franklin-Myers (NY Jets), DB Brandon Jones (Miami Dolphins), WR Josh Reynolds (Detroit Lions), CB Levi Wallace (Pittsburgh Steelers), QB Zach Wilson (NY Jets)

Key Rookies: QB Bo Nix, LB Jonah Elliss, WR Troy Franklin
