Week 8 Review of the NFL

Standard

An Impressive Debut

There was some debate about where Will Levis would be drafted. Would he be taken in the first round and by whom? He wasn’t taken in the first round, but didn’t have to wait long on the second day as the Tennessee Titans took him near the top of the second round. Fast forward to this past Sunday as Levis showed what he can with a 238 yard, 4 touchdown pass performance in a Titans victory. Three of those touchdowns went to WR DeAndre Hopkins, who has now matched his touchdown total from last season. This performance by Levis doesn’t mean the 3-4 Titans are in a good position to clinch a playoff spot. Far from it. What it does show is that they might have found a quarterback to take the reins going forward.

Down Goes Cousins

Just when Minnesota was starting to trend up and put themselves in position for a playoff spot. Their QB Kirk Cousins goes down with a torn achilles ending his season. This doesn’t mean that Cousins’ career is over by any stretch. In the short term though it means that Minnesota will be in an uphill battle for a playoff spot. When WR Justin Jefferson returns from his hamstring injury, things might be fine, but Minnesota traded for QB Josh Dobbs from Arizona to be the guy going forward. He has looked good at times for Arizona, but there was a lot to be desired with that roster in the desert. The one positive they can look at from this is how the New York Jets have been responding since Aaron Rodgers went down with his torn achilles. Minnesota can do the same.

Hitting The Reset Button Again

When Josh McDaniels was fired by the Denver Broncos in 2010 during his second season, it was after their 12th game with a 3-9 record. He didn’t get that far with the Raiders as they decided to cut ties with him after the 8th game of his second season with them. Now I think the lesson here is that the Bill Belichick coaching tree is rather rotten. The track record overall has been awful for assistants who become head coaches elsewhere since the success of Belichick in New England. Matt Patricia was the poster boy for this with his disastrous two and a half seasons in Detroit. With Josh McDaniels now having failed in two spots with similar results, he takes the cake now. Once again the Raiders no matter if they’re in Oakland or Las Vegas are becoming a laughing stock. Since Mark Davis took over as the owner after his father, Al Davis’ passing, he has gone with 8 head coaches since 2011. That includes interim head coaches which has now happened three times. It will be interesting to see who they hire to be the next head coach under Mark. It’ll also be interesting to see if they last longer than three seasons with the Raiders.
